In an article published in the New York Times in July of 2025, author Bret Stephens tried to make the case that the events in Gaza are not a Genocide. He uses faulty logic based on a poor understanding of history as well as atrocity propaganda to make his case. Most scholars who actually know what they are talking about, even Israeli scholars, are in agreement that what is happening in Gaza is in fact a genocide.
Stephens makes many ridiculous arguments for his case. For example, "why isn't the death count higher?" There are many reasons for this. However, the death toll is at this time unknown and some estimates put the real number in the hundreds of thousands, which immediately destroys Stephen's argument. Israel can not simply kill everyone outright. First of all, this would be difficult in the first place, and second there would be huge international outrage.
The tactic Israel has implemented for the elimination of the people of Gaza is to slowly ratchet up the killings in order to see what is allowable to the international community. In 2023, bombing hospitals would not have been possible. However, as the world looks away as time drags by, the IDF now feels it is able to get away with exactly this action.
Stephens says that Israel only bombs targets with notice to the civilians in the area. This is a blatant lie. The IDF now very rarely warns anyone of its coming strikes. He also uses the argument that hundreds of IDF have died fighting, therefore it can't be a genocide. Anyone who is familiar with history will immediately spot this as nonsense. During the Warsaw uprising of 1944, at least 2,000 Nazi soldiers were killed. By Stephens logic, this death toll means that the Holocaust was not a genocide?
Stephens claims there is no intent to commit genocide. Has he not been paying attention to Israeli politicians, military officials and media? Everyone of any standing in Israel has made genocidal statements in relation to Gaza. Stephens also cites that Americans have "accidentally" bombed a school from time to time. Has the US army ever planted explosives in a school and detonated it? Or have they have set a school on fire deliberately? These acts have been committed many times over by the IDF in Gaza.
Stephens is now complicit as a propagandist for the Gaza genocide. He may not realize it yet, but he has put himself in significant legal jeopardy. But like Israel, Stephens likely feels a sense of impunity. He believes he can never face legal consequences for his propaganda. He may well be mistaken.
